Arusha National Park
Arusha National Park packs volcanic crater, alpine forest, and soda lake into 52 square miles — an easy first or last stop on a longer safari, and the trailhead for Mount Meru itself.
The park is built around Mount Meru, a 14,980 ft volcano northwest of Arusha town. The Ngurdoto Crater sits to the southeast, pasture underfoot; the Momella Lakes lie to the northeast, home to flamingo and a long list of wader species. On a clear day, Kilimanjaro is visible 37 miles to the northeast.
It is one of the only parks in Tanzania where you can canoe alongside hippo, or walk on foot with an armed ranger past giraffe and buffalo — most of the country's parks restrict both.

Best time to visit
Arusha's altitude keeps it temperate year-round. June to October (dry season) is best for wildlife; March–May brings rain but excellent light for photography.
