Weather Considerations

Weather plays a major role in climb success. Choosing the right time to climb Kilimanjaro is crucial. Unfavorable conditions make the trek uncomfortable, ruin photographs, and double the climb’s difficulty.

Climbers achieve summit success more readily when the weather on Kilimanjaro is favorable and warm. Located near the equator, Kilimanjaro experiences no true winter or summer—instead, the year divides into dry and rainy periods.

Wet season climbing means slogging through deep mud during the first days. Higher altitudes bring fog and drizzle, with moisture penetrating gear, clothes, and bodies, significantly increasing difficulty.

We generally recommend climbing during the warmest and driest months of the year, from December to mid-March and mid-June to the end of October. These periods offer favorable conditions but are also the busiest months.
