Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Ngorongoro is where natural wonder and human history meet in one place — reliable Big Five sightings inside a crater floor, the Maasai communities who still graze cattle across its rim, and Olduvai Gorge, the "Cradle of Mankind," a short drive away.

The Conservation Area spans 8,292 square kilometres of savannah, forest, and soda lake around the crater itself, and remains one of the few places in Tanzania where conservation and traditional Maasai pastoralism coexist by design rather than by exception.

Descend to the crater floor at first light, while the grass is still cold and the predators are still moving, and you will understand why guides who have worked here for twenty years still call it their favourite drive in the country.

Best time to visit

June to October (dry season) gives the clearest game viewing as animals gather around remaining water. December to February brings the calving migration through the wider conservation area.
