Ruaha National Park

Ruaha is the wild the north has mostly lost — remote, rugged, dotted with ancient baobabs, and cut through by the Great Ruaha River, which draws in elephant, lion, and some of the last wild dog packs left in the country.

The park covers over 20,000 square kilometres of dry riverine bush, and holds large elephant herds, lion, leopard, cheetah, and rarities like African wild dog and greater kudu. Over 570 recorded bird species make it one of the best birding parks in Tanzania as well.

Because so few operators run here, a Ruaha camp can put you on foot for a proper walking safari, tracker ahead, with a stretch of river to yourselves.

Best time to visit

June to October (dry season) is best for game viewing, as animals concentrate along the river. November to April is quieter but rewards birders with lush, green cover.
